thankful thursday

Today I'm super thankful for my 3 March birthday kids! 12, 10 and 3. My, how time flies!

A not-so-great picture of the birthday kids with their respective cakes::
A cheesy picture of the "twins"::
Anna twirling down the block on an afternoon "walk"::
How old are you?
"I'm this many!"::
"I'm this many!" {that's all 10 fingers and 2 big toes, in case you needed a translation}::
Putting 3 candles on her cake at school::

And, just in case you wanted to see the ear injuries, here's the view from the back {she whacked her head and cut all the way through her ear}::
And a not-so-great shot of the front view::
{both taken about 48 hours post-injury}

wanna win somethin'?

See the super cute hat that Sara is wearing in the blog header? My sister-in-law {Kirbs brother's wife} made it for her. She just opened an Etsy store {not Sara, silly . . . my sister-in-law. Sara isn't even 6 months old, she can't knit yet!}. Anyway, Steph is having a contest and giving away a few fun prizes. Check out her shop here and get more info about the contest here! {If you want to enter and win Sara a cute bunny hat, that would be just fine by me!}

I found this on the table next to my bed last night after my sweet 10-year-old had finished writing her birthday thank you notes.
It was there along with the one to her dad and me thanking us for her gift, but this one was just for me. It was addressed to "the best Mom!" ::

Man, I love that girl! How could you not?

multitude monday

Here's my continuing Multitude Monday post, which all started a while back, right here.

"One Thousand Gifts":

1284. free ER consultations that come to you
1285. sunshine on fresh snow
1286. a thawed out van door just in time {it had frozen shut in the rain/ice/snow storm last week and finally thawed out before I had to leave the house with the kids -- my other option was to load them all up through the drivers door and I wasn't sure how I would haul that baby seat up and over 2 rows of seats . . . not fun, I'm sure!}
1287. 9 hours of sleep {in a row!}
1288. seeing my kids discover more and more the joy in giving {and the birthdays that give us the practice}
1289. finding a lost item you've been searching for {and all the cleaning that gets done as a result of the hunt}
1290. two pair of sisters all cuddled in bed reading together by lamplight
1291. lifelong friends
1292. Anna Grace {happy 3rd birthday, sweet girl! When she woke up this morning she told me "it's Anna day!" . . . that's right. It sure is!}
1293. visible evaporation
1294. kids playing nicely
1295. a nearly full {11 of 12 seats} van on the way to church yesterday morning

Alrighty, that's it's for now. Tune in next Monday for the next installment.

thankful thursday

Today I'm so thankful for my birthday kids. Yesterday was a big day around here. Jacob turned 12 and Rebekah hit double digits. How on earth did they get so old? Does that make me old too? Yikes! We had a fun family birthday celebration dinner at Red Robin on Tuesday night {Joe asked this morning if we could have dinner there again tonight . . . um, no! buddy. Sorry!}, fun birthdays yesterday and we're looking forward to a little more celebrating over the weekend. There are both fabulous kids and I'm so thankful to have been chosen to be their mom.

I'm also thankful today for a super kind neighbor -- who also happens to be an ER nurse -- who will come right over and consult on a possibly ER-worthy injury on a certain almost-birthday-girl. No ER visit needed! Dan thought ahead and brought the super glue and glued her up right there in the kitchen. House calls and no co-pay . . . who can beat that? This is not the first {nor, I'm sure, the last} time we've taken advantage of his services. I'm pretty sure I owe him at least $500 by now! But instead from time to time I drop his kids off at this or that, his daughter gets off the kindergarten bus with Joe and eats lunch here, his girls come over here to play, we invite their family over for grilled hot dogs or whatever. It really does take a village! In case you're curious, the patient seems to be doing fine this morning. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go attempt to get all the blood out of her dress. I know, I know, I should have done it right away, but there were a few other things to attend to last night :: a hungry baby, a bleeding Anna, 2 birthday kids, dirty dishes on the table, 2 non-birthday, non-bleeding, non-baby kiddos who needed a hug and story before bed.

babies, babies, babies

I'm going to a baby shower in a couple weeks. It's for a new mom who is pregnant with her first precious little bundle {that they have waited a VERY long time for . . . the better part of a decade}. They are anxiously awaiting a day a couple months off when they will meet their new little one. One might imagine that since I've had so many babies, I'd know right away what the perfect shower gift would be. But, as it turns out, the more babies I have, the more I discover that babies really don't need much at all. A few simple pieces of clothing to keep them warm when it's cold, a big set of burp cloths {although any towel, old t-shirt or, often, your own shirt sleeve will work too}, stuff to eat {which, miraculously, can usually just come with the mom}, a place to sleep {which I discovered over the weekend doesn't always mean you need a crib, even}, some diapers and lots of love. Many retailers would have you believe there are long lists of other necessities, but I really don't think so. At this point in my parenting the only thing that I think I couldn't live without is a baby carrier {or two or three}. Oh, and a nuk! {but that has not been true with all my kids. A couple were quite attached to their thumbs, which can't fall out of your crib at night or get lost, but consequently is a little harder habit to break when the time comes!}

My kids do have toys and books and other "stuff", but with each baby I've gotten rid of more and more of the well-marketed baby "necessities" and have been happier, I think, with less of a collection of various baby paraphernalia. I do, however, currently have 5 different types/styles/models of baby carriers. And, although I'm not sure I need to have 5, I would be in big trouble without at least one. My favorite {at the moment} is a fleece sling that I use at least once a day {and so does Kirb despite the fact that it's rather girly looking -- he's cool like that}. I once had a dream that it got stolen out of my van. Really, I did. It was a terrible dream and in the dream I could hardly wait for the store to open up so I could replace it right away the next morning. But if I'm going to be wearing Sara for hours at a time, it really helps to have her weight distributed on both shoulders, so I also have a Moby wrap {basically an obscenely long piece of -- in my case, brown -- material that you wrap around your body and stick the baby in}. It's great, but a little more time consuming to put on and get loaded. I also have another non-fleece sling, that unfortunately is fitted and was purchased a few pounds {babies} ago and doesn't fit quite as well as it once did . . . I'm hopeful though that when the weather is warmer and the cozy fleece isn't quite as welcome, I will be down a few pounds and it will fit better. Then we have an Ergo baby carrier that I LOVE, although it's not my favorite way to carry teeny tiny babies. Ours is currently just home from Korea where it went with a family to pick up their new little daughter. Almost all babies in Korea are carried {from a really young age} on the backs of their caregivers, so they are used to that. This family didn't have a carrier with a back-carry option, so they borrowed ours. It should be back here soon and Sara will be riding along it in on many a walk to the park as quick as the last of the snow disappears and the rain stops. We also have a Kelty backpack that Kirb got me for my 26th birthday {which happened to be the same day we found out we were pregnant with Rebekah}. It's not my favorite any more, but it also comes in handy at times, and has escorted us on many a day at the state fair! {you can see so much more from up there then from in a stroller!}

Rebekah with Sara in the wrap {it fits ALL sizes, you see!}::
Me with Anna in the {currently ill-fitting} sling::
Anna watches field day at school on my back in the Ergo {while I enjoy a warm latte on a chilly day}::
Sara, exactly two weeks old, at the top of Barn Bluff in Red Wing. Oh, you don't see her there? Well, she's in the girly sling, of course::
Ok, thus ends my baby-wearing rambling for today. Find yourself a baby. Strap 'em on and go for a walk! Happy Spring!

If you're local, a great place to get a baby carrier is Peapods {one of my very favorite stores}. They will help you find which one is right for you and teach you how to use it/put it on and will let you try them all out in the store with your own baby or a really heavy doll that is about the size and weight of a baby about Sara's age {they also have a great website as well}. If you aren't local, I recently discovered a great mom-owned website that specializes in baby carriers. Heavenly Hold is another great resource if you're in the market for a carrier. Check them out!

multitude monday

First of all, it was Rebekah in the pictures on Friday. I never really thought that Sara looked as much like her as some of the other kids, but when I found Rebekah's scrapbook of her first year when cleaning out her room last weekend, I peeked through it and lo and behold, Sara looked just like Rebekah. I guess they really all do look a lot alike as babies! Funny thing is, I think they look really quite different as they grow older. Oh well. Good guessing!

"One Thousand Gifts":

1272. seeing Kirbs' parents::1273. hotel with a pool {and BIG breakfast -- when there are 8 of you, the breakfast alone almost pays for the room}

1275. safety

thankful thursday

I'm so thankful for spring :: For melting. For sunshine. For the shrinking piles of snirt {snow + dirt . . . it's NOT a pretty thing} all around me. For grass peeking through. For hope of the end of winter. For the smell of rain and dirt. For flowers and new life. For puddles to splash in {or "in which to splash", which I'm pretty sure is the correct way to say that if grammar is important to you -- but since I don't think my dad reads this, it's probably safe the first way I said it!}. For going outside without a coat. For no longer needing to squeeze the van into the garage as often. For mud {no, I don't particularly like mud, but I do know that it is a necessary step in the process}. For longer days. I am thankful!

verse 6

The ides of March. That means it's time for verse #6. Rebekah and I are taking part in Beth Moore's Scripture Memory Challenge this year. Here is my verse for the next couple weeks:
Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help. {Hebrews 4.16 NET Bible}

Rebekah is doing this one:
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, rejoice. {Philippians 4.4 NIV}

We both admit we were slackers the last couple weeks and didn't do a good job of working on our 5th verse. Here's to getting back at it and getting the 6th one down pat as spring approaches. If you want to join us in memorizing 24 verses in 2011, that's great! You can "register" the fact that you are taking part in it on Beth's blog. That's where you can log your verses each month and just generally be encouraged by all the other people resolving to do something so beneficial along with you. Blessings on you!

five {alternately titled :: not-so-flashback friday}

crazy, but true::
she's in her 6th month of life . . .

she even has a room corner of her own::
{and we made this corner all hers}
in the room she shares with her brother {the not not-as-big, big brother}
she's a bright-eyed, happy, busy girl who loves life and all the action of our family::
{but thankfully, she also loves her bed . . . and naps!}
that's our girl. we sure do love her!

He's back!

I'm so thankful today to have my husband back. And my kiddos are thrilled to have a dad around again. After spending at least part of the last 8 days away from home {LA, then Phoenix and a few spots in between}, it's so nice to have Kirb back here. Where he belongs!

I am also thankful for all the help that I had while he was away. I have so many wonderful, kind people in my life. And things went relatively well and pretty smooth while he was away . . . another thing to be thankful for today.

Ready or not, it's March 1st. That means it's time for verse #5. Rebekah and I are taking part in Beth Moore's Scripture Memory Challenge this year. Here is my verse for the next couple weeks:
Let your gentleness be evident to all. {Philippians 4.5a NIV}

Rebekah is doing the same verse, but in a different version than I am:
Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. {Philippians 4.5 NLT}
